Minnesota strawberry season opened this week and the berries are begging to be picked. This morning I stopped out to Afton Apple Orchard in Afton, Minnesota and picked 30 pounds of strawberries for freezer jam, pies and fresh eating. The berries are ripe and juicy from the rain we’ve had this year.  There’s nothing that says “Hello Summer” like a morning in the berry patch followed by an afternoon in the kitchen making jam. Here’s a quick video update of my day today and a 3 ingredient recipe for your own strawberry freezer jam: Strawberry Freezer Jam – Minnesota Locavore from Amy Sippl on Vimeo.Read More →

No one has complained more than me about this miserable spring we’ve had, but there’s one group of people around Wisconsin and Minnesota that can’t get enough of this weather. Maple sugarers around the area are having a bumper year compared to the warm temperatures and dismal maple syrup season of 2012. Last weekend we headed back home to Wisconsin to take part in a long tradition in my husband’s family. The thick maple forests around the area where we grew up are some of the best maple syrup producing areas in the state. His uncles, cousins and friends can all be found strapping on snowshoesRead More →

The kitchen partner and I snuck up to Nowthen yesterday to enjoy the fall sunshine and some Minnesota wines. Goose Lake Farm and Winery was the first winery we visited when we moved to Minnesota way back when. If you live in or visit the Twin Cities area, be sure to make Goose Lake one of the stops your list. With more than 40 different wines to choose from (including a sparkling rosé I could have for brunch, lunch, dinner…or all three!) there’s lots get excited about. The drive is about 50 minutes from downtown Saint Paul, perfect for a sunny Fall afternoon. When youRead More →
