    Creamy Celery Soup

    Since ending the Find it Local Friday series in August, I haven’t spent much time writing about my favorite in-season ingredients.  Fall is a fantastic time to be a locavore.  Pumpkins, squash, and root vegetables pile up while we savor the last of cold-hearty broccoli and greens.  Celery appears in many of my dishes this time of year and is the thing you should pick up at the farmers’ market this week.  The kitchen partner likes the classic ants on a log approach while I get caught chopping it up for stews, soups, and salads.   Occasionally I’ll bump into a recipe that puts celery center stage rather than just…

    Mums on the Porch

    Cross off “A flower finally grows in the heat of my front porch” twice on my birthday list this year. There’s now a healthy crop of mums soaking up this late October heat.  I’m on the couch enjoying a good romantic comedy and a cup of apple cider from Hoch Orchard.  Locavore life is good.

    It’s okay to be Fall…

    Today, I’m okay that it’s Fall. School has started and my work schedule has regulated a bit. Pumpkins and apples are in season and I’ve got beautiful red, orange and golden-yellow mums on my front porch. All the peppers are pickled (see my new post on 20Food), the jam is jarred, and the broccoli is frozen.  We are headed to the last Twins game of the season tonight. It’s been a fantastic summer full of growing, cooking, camping, writing, working, and friends.  But, just as the garden has slowed down this week, so have things for me.
